Soap Scum on Faucet

Soap Scum Cleaning Edition: Minute Cleaning Hacks

You’ve spent your entire day off cleaning the house. You jump into your freshly cleaned shower and what do you see, SOAP SCUM. In today’s Soap Scum Cleaning Edition: Minute Cleaning Hacks we will be sharing our favorite methods for tackling those chalky spots so that all your fixtures will have that just cleaned look day after day.

Soap Scum Cleaning Tips

Soap scum buildup can be a source of frustration whether you are cleaning the kitchen or bathrooms. It takes the form of cloudy film or spots and can be very difficult to remove. Simply scrubbing with cleaner will not solve the problem. Soap scum is composed of a wide array of things including mildew, hard water, mineral deposits, soap talc and body oils. It is formed when the fatty acids in soap interact with the mineral ions in hard water.

Vinegar For The Win

We’ve talked endlessly about the wonders of vinegar, so it’s no surprise that it tops the list for getting rid of that pesky soap scum. Start by mixing equal parts vinegar and distilled water in a spray bottle, then add a tablespoon of dish detergent (Dawn is our favorite). Generously spray down your tub or shower with the mixture and allow it to soak in for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush and rinsing. This mixture is also fantastic for daily upkeep. Simply spray onto the glass after showering, rinse and squeegee clean.

Baking Soda For The Heavy Lifting

If the soap scum has been building up for a while you may need something a little stronger. Place one cup of baking soda in a bowl and add in ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar. Once the reaction from combining the two together dies down, mix the two substances to form a paste. Apply the paste to any areas with soap scum, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Lastly, scrub the paste away with a non-abrasive sponge and rinse with water.

Your Medicine Cabinet Can Help Too

Hydrogen peroxide isn’t just for wound care. Particularly heavy soap scum can benefit, substitute a tablespoon or more of hydrogen peroxide instead of vinegar in the baking soda paste. Spread the mixture and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. Rinse well and dry.

Now that we have a sparkly clean bathroom, I think I’ll have a long soak in the tube. Hope you enjoyed Soap Scum Cleaning Edition: Minute Cleaning Hacks. If you are still unsure why not let us help.
